Apothic Inferno 2014
Wine AdvocateThere are several Apothic blends, Inferno is 51% Zinfandel and the rest Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir and even Dornfelder. It is a big wine (15.8% alcohol), has some light residual sugar, and is meant to satisfy hedonists, given its fruit-driven, jammy and spicy, oaky style. The wine is aged in used bourbon oak barrels that have French and American oak staves, which makes the wine even more controversial, as the first aroma is as if there was bourbon in your glass, but then the red and darker fruits begin to emerge with the caramelized oak notes. I totally understand elitists and wine snobs turning up their noses at this wine - but it is hedonistic, flavor-filled and innovative. It is meant to be drunk upon release, so take advantage of that and consume it.
